Meanwhile, one day in the year 1954, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, K Kamaraj Tirune, was visiting Laveli district! Suddenly his attention was drawn to a child grazing a cow near the railway crossing. When they asked the child, "Why do you graze cows instead of studying? Why don't you go to school?" On this, the child said, "If I go to school, will you give me food to fill my stomach? I will be able to study only when my stomach is full." These words of the child had a deep impact on Kamaraj, because Kamaraj himself had to leave studies at the age of 11 to run the household after his father's death! In such a situation, he appealed to the government to solve this problem. Together they started Mid Day Meal in the year 1955!
