Rising above the busy Avenida de Mayo, the Palacio Barolo is one of those buildings that seems to belong to another world. While cars, buses and pedestrians move continuously along the street below, the extraordinary silhouette of the palace stands above the city with its towers, arches, intricate details and unmistakable dome. Built more than a century ago, it remains one of the most fascinating architectural landmarks in Buenos Aires. The story of the Palacio Barolo begins in the early 20th century, when Italian architect Mario Palanti was commissioned by businessman Luis Barolo to create a building unlike anything else in the city. Construction began in 1919, and when the palace was inaugurated in 1923, it became the tallest building in Buenos Aires and one of the tallest in South America at the time. But the most intriguing part of the Barolo is not simply its height. The building was conceived with numerous references to Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. Its composition evokes the journey through Hell, Purgatory and Heaven, while the tower rises toward the sky and culminates in the famous rotating lighthouse. Even the proportions and many architectural details were given symbolic meaning. From street level, you can slowly take in the many layers of its facade — the dense arrangement of windows, monumental entrance, changing shapes and decorative elements that make the building look different from every angle. Above it all, the distinctive tower and dome create a dramatic silhouette against the Buenos Aires skyline. And all of this unfolds in the middle of everyday city life. Traffic passes along Avenida de Mayo, buses move through the streets, people walk beneath the facade, and the sounds of the city continue around this remarkable piece of history. For a few minutes, let your attention settle on the Palacio Barolo and discover the details of a building that was designed not simply to be tall, but to tell a story. Thanks for watching!
