Everybody knows Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton, Hamilton died, and the country lost its mind. But the duel itself wasn’t what shocked people. It was who died. By 1804, dueling was already a fixture in American life. Men challenged each other over insults, politics, public reputation, and honor. And even after Hamilton’s death, the practice kept growing for decades. This video breaks down where dueling came from, how the Code Duello worked, why ā€œsecondsā€ were supposed to prevent bloodshed, and how a formal process built around honor slowly rotted into something closer to murder. We look at the weapons — big-caliber smoothbore flintlock pistols — and why your odds of dying in a duel were lower than most people think. Misfires were common, aim was rushed, and an apology could still stop the whole thing right up until the trigger was pulled. But then there were men like Andrew Jackson. Before he became president, Jackson dueled Charles Dickinson in 1806. Dickinson fired first and hit Jackson. Jackson’s pistol misfired, which under the rules should have counted as his shot. But Jackson cocked the pistol again, took aim, and killed Dickinson. A lot of people at the time called it exactly what it looked like: Murder. And that’s the bigger story. America passed laws against dueling, but the laws didn’t stop it. Men just crossed city or state lines and fought somewhere else. The most famous dueling ground in America sat at Bladensburg, Maryland, right outside Washington, D.C., where politicians could ride out, shoot at each other, and go home. So what finally killed dueling? Not the law. Public opinion. By the Civil War era, Americans had watched a ritual that was supposed to preserve honor and prevent violence become a machine for turning insults into funerals. Eventually, the country decided one wrong word on a Friday night was no longer worth a challenge on Saturday and a funeral on Sunday.
