Did Rahul Gandhi's rally cause an ₹11,000 crore business loss in Delhi in just one day? And did nearly 2.5 lakh shops shut down during the peak Diwali shopping season? On November 1, 2026, Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee and other INDIA bloc leaders organised a major rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. But the protest sparked a controversy over its economic impact. The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), led by Chairman Brijesh Goyal, claimed that the rally disrupted business across major markets, including Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazaar, Karol Bagh, Connaught Place and other trading centres. According to CTI, approximately 2.5 lakh out of 3 lakh shops in the affected markets remained closed, causing an estimated ₹11,000 crore loss. The organisation's breakdown included ₹8,800 crore in wholesale and retail trade, ₹1,500 crore in transport and logistics, ₹500 crore in hospitality and tourism, and ₹200 crore in informal-sector earnings. However, these figures are estimates provided by CTI and have not been independently audited or verified. Before the rally, traders had repeatedly requested Rahul Gandhi to postpone the event until after Diwali. Gandhi responded that protests would stop if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was removed. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh later disputed the business-loss claims, while Rahul Gandhi alleged that the BJP had forcibly closed shops in Connaught Place. That allegation has also not been independently established. On November 2, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) urged Delhi's Lieutenant Governor to designate protest venues outside major commercial areas. In this video, we examine the ₹11,000 crore loss claim, the reported market closures, the political disagreement and the challenge of balancing peaceful protests with business activity.
