If you didn’t, let me try and paint you a picture here. Let’s say you followed the trailers, the news, each little drip of an update that came down the pipeline for you, and after waiting, it was finally here. That was me at one point in my life, this trailer introduced me to what a “Fallout” was, and got me to follow along with the news about this game coming out, even if I wouldn’t be able to play it until a few years later. It wasn’t exactly a masterpiece, there are some pretty clear issues with the game and noticeable signs that the developers kinda ran out of time, but it’s not bad, the reviews were good, and I had fun playing it, even if I could recognize it wasn’t exactly what everyone wanted. Going online to see what other people thought about the game is when it really hit me that like, people really hate Fallout 4. Like yeah the dialogue system is stupid, the story kinda falls apart halfway through, for some reason there’s like a single quest in the whole game that actually has skill checks…okay this sounds really negative, but I promise it’s not THAT bad. The truly worst thing about the game is that by god it will crash to desktop at the worst possible moment. The actual worst thing about the game is that by god it will crash to desktop when you least expect it. Like when Shaun crashed my game for no reason and I had to make a brand new save. For better and for worse, social media and gaming are completely intertwined now. At any moment I can access any opinion I want on any game that has ever been released to get a full scope of exactly what I’m hopping into. I can see 4k 60fps no commentary playthroughs of the entire game, depending on the game you can even go back and see publications interview people and talk about the exact thought process behind each decision in the game. Social Media has literally turned my favorite hobby into something profitable, and has forever changed my life. The downside is that, in the same way you’re subject to my opinion, you’re subject to everyone else’s dumb opinion as well. For every A+ plus hour long video essay breaking down why your favorite video game of all time is the best to ever do it, my name is razbuten and I love skyrim there’s a poorly edited six hour video that also talks about how your favorite video game is the worst thing to happen since the bubonic plague and if you enjoy it you’re a tourist idiot stupid poopoohead. mmm my name is EVIL razbuten and i hate skyrim mmmm yess But that’s okay because they’re wrong, and you know they’re wrong, so the correct response to this should be to find their address online and post it in the comments, it’s only fair. Things usually get pretty heated for game discussion come time for the game awards, which is only natural. People are passionate about games, and that’s a good thing, it just means that everyone really wants THEIR game to win, and will take any opportunity to “explain” how you’re wrong and that actually genshin impact needs to win best mobile game of the year because if it doesn’t then there’s no free currency given out to players. For every deserved victory at the game awards someone is there to comment about how the category was completely stolen from the true winner, which is the one that was definitely not supposed to win under any circumstance whatsoever.
