Tiny Robots Made From Lab-Grown Mouse Muscles Can Jump, Swim and Walk! Scientists at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, have developed tiny biohybrid robots powered by lab-grown mouse muscle cells. These miniature machines can jump, swim, walk across surfaces and even grasp objects, offering a new approach to building robots using living tissues. The researchers combined living skeletal muscle tissue with a soft, water-rich material called hydrogel. Unlike earlier systems, they designed both components together using computer simulations to maximize movement. The team used an algorithm to determine the best arrangement of muscle tissue and the ideal properties of the artificial scaffold. They then created the structures using a light-based 3D-printing technique called xolography. The resulting devices measure approximately 1.5 centimetres long and produce movements visible to the naked eye. Their range of motion is up to 11 times greater than that of earlier systems containing comparable amounts of muscle tissue. One version can jump about 5 millimetres with a single muscle contraction, while a walking version moves at 6.2 millimetres per second. However, challenges remain. The living muscles require nutrient solutions to survive, and larger robots may need artificial blood-vessel-like systems to supply oxygen and nutrients. The research, published in Nature Communications in 2026, could help scientists develop more flexible robots by combining living tissues with artificial materials.
