KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Before a building on a West Michigan college campus comes down its hidden history is being unveiled. Newschannel 3 was there for the big reveal at Western Michigan University. Suspense was building Wednesday morning as a time capsule saw sunlight for the first time in 52 years. The Wesley Foundation, a United Methodist organization for students at WMU, had long forgotten about the time capsule hidden in their cornerstone. The discovery was made this past summer when looking at old photos. After unearthing the copper box behind the cornerstone and cutting it open, history came alive. The time capsule came with a handy type-written list of everything that was left inside. There was an audio recording from the groundbreaking of the building that was on a reel-to-reel tape. Along with newspapers, hymnals, and information about what was going on at Wesley and WMU in 1963. I think it really shows the rich history of the Methodist movement on campuses. A really great feeling of connection with our tradition, said Lisa Batten, Campus Pastor and Executive Director of the Wesley Foundation at WMU. Now that the time capsule has been opened, Wesley is looking to the future. Theyre getting ready to move into their new building, which is being built just steps away from campus. Campus grew up around us so now we're the center of main campus. We were going through with plans for major renovation and the university approached us and asked if we'd be interested in selling this location to them, Batten said. The new building is smaller, but it's a more functional space that fits the needs of todays college students. Just a place for students to feel comfortable and safe, Batten said. The foundation is planning a send-off for the old building. The university plans on tearing it down after they move out in February. In the new building will be the same time capsule box, holding a different set of memories for future generations to discover. Wanting to write personal letters to people in the future, which I think would be really exciting, Batten said.
