On the night of July 9th, 1958, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the Fairweather Fault in southeast Alaska. Ninety million tons of rock broke off the mountainside above Gilbert Inlet and fell three thousand feet into Lituya Bay. The water it displaced ran up the opposite slope and stripped the forest to bare rock at a height of 1,720 feet — taller than the Empire State Building, taller than any structure on Earth in 1958. It remains the highest wave ever recorded anywhere, and nothing since has come close. There were three fishing boats anchored in the bay and six people aboard them. Two of those boats were carried over the trees and their crews lived to describe it — which is why this is not only the largest wave ever measured, but the only one of its kind that human beings have ever watched happen. This is the full story: the geologist who had spent years studying strange lines in the forest above the bay without knowing what caused them, the four minutes of shaking, the fisherman who realised he could see a glacier that should have been hidden behind a mountain, the father who turned his boat into the wave with his seven-year-old son aboard — and what happened to Bill Swanson when he came back to the bay four years later. 📌 Sources include USGS Professional Paper 354-C by Don J. Miller, which contains the survivors' own accounts, and archival photography from the 1958 survey.
