For our Goodwill Ambassador Theo James, the right to seek safety is personal. His grandfather fled Nazi-occupied Greece and found refuge in Syria. More than 80 years later, Theo retraced his journey. His family’s story is a reminder of why the world made a commitment 75 years ago: no one fleeing for their life should be denied the chance to find safety. That commitment still stands. And so must our resolve to protect it today and for generations to come. Full Transcript: Theo James, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador: For me, the refugee crisis is personal. During the Second World War, my grandfather, Nicholas Tactless, was a trainee doctor in Greece when the Nazis invaded Athens. As German troops pushed through the mainland, he was left with a single option escape, embarking on a journey that many thousands of refugees have made since. But in the opposite direction, he boarded a tiny boat and crossed the Aegean Sea to Turkey. From there he traveled to Damascus, where finally he found safety. I grew up hearing stories about Damascus and starting over, and now I'm standing in the same city he once relied upon for refuge. And it's a strange kind of full circle moment. In 1945, after serving in the British Navy and as the dust settled on perhaps the largest refugee crisis the world has ever seen, he joined one of the first humanitarian agencies established by the newly formed United Nations, which was in many ways the first incarnation of UNHCR. UNHCR Archives Employee, We found the file for your for your grandfather. Theo James, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, My grandfather's job was to treat tuberculosis and typhoid, and that was rife in the camps at the time. Unlike my grandfather, I don't have the skills to provide medical help to people in need. Thank you. Instagram was hard. But as a goodwill ambassador for the UNHCR, I will keep making the moral case for asylum and to ensure meaningful solutions and protection for displaced people. There's no point in me pontificating about it. What I need to do working with the UNHCR is hear people's stories and tell their stories. And today, so many Syrian refugees are returning home after years of conflict. And they want to rebuild their homes, their schools, their neighborhoods. Syrian Returnee Thank God I returned to my country. I brought my children back to grow up with our culture and traditions. Theo James, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Without the solidarity of the Syrian people. My grandfather would not have found safety. And that is why I hope to inspire solidarity in the next generation. And although much has changed since 1945, the UN still remains the only organization where all the world's nations can gather together to discuss global problems and find shared solutions. It is imperative that the UN continues to do its work for successive generations and frankly, for the good of humanity. I know from my own family history that anyone can become a refugee at any time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Information for media: If you would like to use this video to communicate refugee stories or require B-Roll, transcripts, stills or much more information, please visit our media page: https://media.unhcr.org UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, works to protect and assist those fleeing war and persecution.
