We returned to the Appalachian Mountains… but this time, we’re going deeper than ever before. For more than a century, fire lookout towers were the eyes of the mountains. One person could spend days — sometimes weeks — completely isolated from civilization, watching hundreds of square miles of wilderness for the first signs of smoke. Most of those towers have since been abandoned. But somehow… we were given an assignment to spend the night inside one. This is Part 1 of our new Appalachian Mountains horror series. Our destination is FIRE TOWER 13 — a remote lookout station buried deep in the mountains, miles from the nearest town and surrounded by seemingly endless forest. The plan sounded simple: Drive into the mountains. Reach the lookout. Take over the station. Complete the assigned fire watch tasks. And survive one night completely isolated above the Appalachian wilderness. But things started feeling wrong long before we reached the tower. On the drive in, we encountered strange warnings, unexplained activity along the road, and signs that made us question exactly where we were being sent. And the farther into the mountains we traveled… the less everything around us seemed to make sense. The Appalachian Mountains have been surrounded by terrifying stories for generations — missing hikers, strange lights between the trees, voices coming from places where nobody should be, people disappearing from marked trails, and warnings passed down by those who know these mountains better than anyone: Stay on the trail. Don’t investigate strange sounds. If you see something in the woods… keep moving. And whatever happens after dark… stay inside. We originally thought Fire Tower 13 would be one of the safest places we could possibly spend the night. Hundreds of feet above the forest. A radio. Emergency equipment. A clear view for miles in every direction. But standing beneath that tower for the first time, surrounded by nothing but mountains and trees… it didn’t feel safe at all.
