A hitchhiker. A mysterious woman. One wrong turn that changes everything. Released in 1945, **Detour** is one of the defining films of American film noir—a lean, unsettling thriller whose limited budget became part of its unmistakable visual identity. **Tom Neal** stars as Al Roberts, a down-on-his-luck pianist hitchhiking across the country to reunite with his girlfriend. A chance encounter on a lonely highway sends his journey somewhere much darker. Then he meets Vera, played with unforgettable intensity by **Ann Savage**, and Al finds himself trapped in an increasingly desperate cycle of paranoia, deception, and murder. Directed by **Edgar G. Ulmer**, *Detour* was made quickly and economically, yet its stark photography, claustrophobic atmosphere, fatalistic narration, and relentless sense of bad luck helped turn this modest production into one of film noir’s enduring classics. 🎞️ **RESTORED & PRESENTED BY WALT** For this WALT presentation, our team worked with available source material to improve clarity and modern viewing quality while preserving the rough, shadowy character that makes *Detour* look and feel like *Detour*. That distinction matters with a film like this. The original production was created with limited resources, and its gritty photography is part of its history—not simply something to be erased. Our restoration process focuses on reducing distracting source artifacts and unwanted noise, improving tonal definition and visible detail, and carefully upscaling the image without attempting to turn an inexpensive 1945 production into something it was never meant to be. We pay particular attention to retaining natural film texture, faces in darker scenes, nighttime detail, and the dramatic contrast of the original black-and-white photography. Enhancement decisions are reviewed throughout the process so improvements don't introduce an overly sharpened or artificially modern appearance. The audio is also reviewed and enhanced where the surviving source permits, with an emphasis on making dialogue and Al's essential narration clearer while respecting the limitations and character of the original recording. Every WALT title is individually reviewed and prepared by our team. Different source materials require different decisions, so restoration is approached film by film rather than applying one identical automated treatment across our library. 🎥 **HOW WE RESTORE CLASSIC MEDIA** WALT documents the work that goes into restoring and preparing classic entertainment for modern viewing. Our restoration process video will be added here soon. 🎬 **WHY THIS FILM MATTERS** What *Detour* lacked in production resources, it made up for in atmosphere and ingenuity. Its stripped-down filmmaking became a strength, creating a bleak world in which coincidence, desperation, and fate seem to close in around its characters. The film's reputation only grew with time. *Detour* was eventually selected for preservation in the **United States National Film Registry** for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance—an extraordinary legacy for such a modestly produced film. More than eight decades later, Vera's ferocity, Al's doomed narration, and that lonely road still make *Detour* one of the most distinctive experiences in classic noir. 📺 Discover more restored classic films, vintage television, forgotten Hollywood, documentaries, and timeless Americana at **@WALTplusTV**. **WALT — Where Americana Lives Today** Preserving yesterday’s entertainment for today’s audience. #Detour #FilmNoir #AnnSavage #TomNeal #ClassicMovies
