What if the secret to a better garden isn't endless watering, fertillizing, and soil amendments? What if focusing more on our site conditions helps us create a garden that's less work? In this video, I’m sharing the results of my first full-season trial garden at Rabbit Run in Kentucky, where I tested a different approach to gardening. Instead of trying to force the garden to fit the plants I want, I let the soil, climate, and growing conditions determine which plants belong? I didn't bring in topsoil, amend the clay, or try to create the "perfect" growing conditions. Instead, I planted a variety of plants from seed and watched closely throughout the growing season to see which ones thrived and which struggled. Some got removed before the season was over. From spring seedlings to the heat, humidity, and heavy rain of a Kentucky summer, this experiment taught me a lot about resilient plants, site-specific gardening, sustainable gardening, and working with nature instead of constantly fighting it. By the end of the season, I had a much clearer idea of which plants earned a place in the garden—and which ones didn't. I’m taking what I learned at Rabbit Run one step further with a new trial garden at Sugar Hill, where I'll continue testing plants and exploring how we can create beautiful gardens that require less intervention. 🌱 In this video I cover: . Creating a trial garden without amending the soil . Choosing plants based on site conditions . Gardening in Kentucky's climate . Observing soil, moisture, light, and climate . Identifying resilient and low-maintenance plants . Learning which plants thrive—and which don't . Working with nature instead of fighting it . Planning future trials at Sugar Hill and Rabbit Run If you're interested in garden design, gardening with clay soil, low-maintenance gardening, sustainable gardening, growing from seed, resilient plants, trial gardens, cottage garden plants, perennial gardening, or gardening in Kentucky, I hope this experiment gives you some ideas for your own garden. 🌿 Subscribe for more garden experiments, plant trials, garden design, and lessons from Rabbit Run and Sugar Hill.
