Hegel's great early work, the Phenomenology of Spirit, we finish our study of a new major section of the work, "Reason," discussing the sub-section, "Observing Reason". I read and comment on paragraphs 294, 295, 296, and 297 of the text here. Universal life, embodied in the genus, develops the differences of the Notion as a numerical series, which goes against the Notion. The genus also, as Hegel says, suffers violence from the universal individual, the Earth, which contains the actual differences as they are in themselves, which the genus abstractly represents. Observation of reason can only encounter itself as reason at this point as life in general, which, however, does not have a rational ordering and orientation, and thus loses hold on universality. What reason aims to grasp is the life of Spirit, or world-history, but life as such does not have a history. Observing reason, at this point, after many attempts, has failed, at least in part, in making sense of the organism in terms of laws, order, system, and now must take stock of that failure, and shift its object to a new matter for observation In this video series, I will be working through the entire Phenomenology, paragraph by paragraph -- for each one, first reading the paragraph, and then commenting on what Hegel is doing, referencing, discussing, etc. in that paragraph.
