By 1916, the Ottoman Empire was fighting for survival across the Middle East. Russia’s Caucasus Army smashed through Erzurum, seized Trabzon, and drove deep into eastern Anatolia, forcing the Ottomans to gamble on a desperate counteroffensive with Mustafa Kemal’s Gallipoli veterans. Meanwhile, Britain was still reeling from Gallipoli and the surrender at Kut, but in the Sinai the defense of Romani stopped the Ottoman advance toward the Suez Canal and opened the road to Palestine. As railways, pipelines, mounted columns, and desert logistics reshaped the front, the war entered a new phase. At the same time, Sharif Hussein of Mecca launched the Arab Revolt. With British gold, naval support, artillery, and the arrival of T. E. Lawrence, the rebellion spread through Hejaz, capturing Mecca, Jeddah, Taif, and Yanbu while threatening the Ottoman grip on Arabia.
