Toy Story 5 is a heartfelt story that perfectly encapsulates every emotion a child may go through in every aspect of the story. From the characters, cinematography and even music, this film is incredible on every front. There’s never a moment of boredom, and I found myself always engaged in what the characters were dealing with. The storyline follows Jessie (Joan Cusack), a toy cowgirl appointed sheriff by their kid, Bonnie (Scarlett Spears), attempting to help Bonnie make friends. However, this is more difficult thanks to the introduction of technology making kids stop playing with toys, and when Bonnie gets a Lilypad (Greta Lee), she stops playing as well. Now, with the help of her friends, Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), she works to get technology away from her kid while trying to make her a real friend. The film’s animation is outstanding – the animation team has gone above and beyond to make it look striking. It is gorgeous to look at throughout, with outdoor scenes looking unbelievable thanks to the vibrant colors of nature. I especially enjoyed how they use a unique animation style whenever the toys are being played with; not only does it differentiate between real life and imagination, but the animation style used is incredibly stunning and pleasing to look at. The story is well written, with every emotion shining through and the film is paced extremely well – there’s never a dull moment. For example, at the beginning, when Bonnie is unable to make any friends you feel sorry for her, yet when she has fun playing you feel the joy she’s feeling. This is helped by the remarkable soundtrack in both the score and the lyrics. An example is the song used in the credits, “I Knew It, I Knew You” by Taylor Swift. It’s a wonderful way to end the movie; not only is it catchy, but it perfectly explores the themes of friendship and sorrow in the film. The characters are well written as well, especially Bonnie and Jessie. Bonnie acts as a typical child; there is never a moment where she feels unbelievable, which makes her experiencing unfortunate events more heartbreaking for the audience. Jessie’s emotional scenes, portrayed by the voice talent of Joan Cusack, had me in tears – despite being a toy, she is immensely realistic. Her feelings feel real, and you understand why she’s going through all the hassle she does for those she cares about. This film beautifully shows every emotion one may go through fighting for people they care about. The film’s message is to not judge people by how you first meet them. Be forewarned that there is some bullying shown along with some intense action scenes with the toys. Toy Story 5 gets 5 out of 5 stars from me and I recommend it for ages 5 to 18, plus adults.
