Full Transcript: You might have heard that baldness runs in families, and going bald is genetically determined. But is that true? Is there a baldness gene responsible for hair loss? You will get the answer to this question in today’s video. Stay tuned. So the scientific name of male pattern baldness is androgenetic alopecia. Alopecia is the scientific name given to any kind of hair loss, be it for example male or female pattern hair loss, hair loss caused by chemotherapy, postpartum hair loss, or whatever. But why androgenetic? Andro - genetic. Well, as this name suggests, it is an androgen related condition. Androgens are the male hormones, and they are the immediate cause of male pattern baldness. But the disease also has a genetic component. Meaning the androgens usually only cause hair loss in genetically predisposed individuals. If you don’t have the genetic predisposition, these same androgens probably won’t do anything to your hair. So the question is: How many genes are involved in male pattern baldness? As late as the 1980s, scientists believed that male pattern baldness was down to one simple single gene. Cockayne (1933) “The condition may be a simple dominant” Orentreich (1978) “A single dominant sex-limited gene” McKusick (1983) “A single major gene” You either had this gene and went bald, or you didn’t have it, and didn’t go bald. In genetics this kind of inheritance is called autosomal dominant. So scientists believed that this single gene was carried by both men and women, but only men expressed it. But we now know that baldness is not inherited like that. Things actually couldn’t be more different. Guys it’s astonishing, looking back now, how scientists could be so wrong just 30 years ago. Rather than one single gene, there are many, many different genes involved (I’ll tell you how many in a minute). This kind of inheritance is called polygenic inheritance. So each of these quote “bad genes” contribute something to the baldness. The more of these bad genes that you have, the more likely you are to a)start balding at a younger age and b) the more severe the extent of your hair loss. On the other hand, the fewer of these genes that you have, the later in life you start going bald, and the more mild your eventual degree of baldnesss. Now with the improvement in genetic analysis techniques, scientists have been able to identify an ever-increasing number of genes. As late as 2012, around 8 different genes had been identified, scattered in various chromosomes. But with the exponential improvements in technology, this number has now gone up dramatically. In 2017 a paper in the journal PLOS GENETICS reported the findings of one of the largest, most comprehensive genetic analyses to date. This study used genetic data from a whopping 52 thousand men. This data was taken from the UK Biobank, one of the largest human tissue databases in the world. This unprecedented sample size allowed for the identification of many new genes responsible for androgenetic alopecia. How many?
