If Democratic nominee Joe Biden becomes the 46th president of the US it will put “pressure” on Australia over the Paris Agreement, according to the US Studies Centre’s Brendon O'Connor. “The Americans want to set targets, they want to have a net-zero emissions target by 2050,” Mr O'Connor told Sky News. “The Koreans and the Japanese have announced that over the last couple of days, maybe anticipating to get on the right side of the Biden administration.” His remarks come after Mr Biden pledged on Thursday afternoon, Australian time, to immediately rejoin the climate accord. “Today, the Trump Administration officially left the Paris Climate Agreement. And in exactly 77 days, a Biden Administration will rejoin it,” Mr Biden said in a tweet. Mr O'Connor said despite Mr Biden’s limited policies, his climate plan “sticks out”. “It’s something that I think Democrats with a lot of passion on the left side of politics are going to hold him to, they’re going to hold him to that in some sense for the younger voters who really came out for Biden,” he said. “That will put some pressure on Australia to say well does Australia want to be in this sort of camp of nations which is looking for multilateral agreements, America coming back into the international organisations and saying look, we’ve had a dark time but we’re now wanting to cooperate, we’re wanting to be part of international sort of multilateral orders and agreements and treaties. “Australia certainly doesn’t want to be on the outside of that. “There’s a lot of benefits for Australia to be inside of that. “Because of our sort of difficulties with China recently, we want to be seen as part of a group rather than a nation that’s got its own peculiar individual interests off to a side.”
