Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan spent decades as Soviet republics, and their modern borders, economies and political systems were shaped enormously by that experience. In this video, we trace the history of Soviet Central Asia from the beginning. We start with the Russian Empire's conquest of Central Asia, the incorporation of the Kazakh steppe and the Uzbek khanates, and the unusual system of Russian protectorates that allowed rulers in places like Bukhara and Khiva to remain in power. Then everything changes in 1917. The Bolshevik Revolution promised to liberate the peoples of the former Russian Empire—but Central Asia would not be allowed to simply walk away. We look at the Soviet takeover of the region, the Basmachi resistance, the creation of the Turkestan ASSR and the Soviet republics of Bukhara and Khiva, and Stalin's national delimitation of Central Asia in the 1920s. We then examine what Sovietization actually meant for the region: collectivization, forced sedentarisation, the destruction of traditional nomadic economies, famine in Kazakhstan, the suppression of Islam, changes to writing systems, industrialisation, mass literacy, education and the creation of Soviet national identities. But the Soviet story doesn't end with Stalin. By the 1970s and 1980s, Central Asia had developed its own local communist elites, who increasingly governed the republics through networks of loyalists, relatives and regional power. When Gorbachev's reforms began weakening the Soviet system, these same elites found themselves in charge of five countries that were suddenly heading toward independence. So what happened next? We look at all five Central Asian states individually: 🇹🇲 Turkmenistan and the bizarre dictatorship of Saparmurat Niyazov, the Turkmenbashi, his cult of personality and the Ruhnama. 🇺🇿 Uzbekistan and the authoritarian rule of Islam Karimov, the Aral Sea disaster, the Andijan massacre and Uzbekistan's complicated relationship with Russia and the West. 🇹🇯 Tajikistan and the devastating Tajik Civil War, the rise of Emomali Rahmon and the country's continuing dependence on Russia. 🇰🇬 Kyrgyzstan, the most politically turbulent of the five, with the Tulip Revolution, the 2010 uprising, the 2020 revolution and the rise of Sadyr Japarov. 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan, the largest and most resource-rich Central Asian state, from Soviet nuclear testing and Baikonur to the long rule of Nursultan Nazarbayev and the rise of Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. This is the story of how five Soviet republics were created, how Soviet rule transformed Central Asia, and how the collapse of the USSR produced five very different countries. From Stalin and the Basmachi to Niyazov, Karimov, Nazarbayev and Rahmon, this is the history of Soviet Central Asia—and the five 'Stans' that emerged from the ruins of the Soviet Union.
