SOUNDBITE: (German) Michael Mack, restaurant owner "the concept of fast food is something that is relatively uncomfortable. One has to queue for a long time, then take the meal to the table and clean up after the meal. The idea here is to increase the comfort in as much as the meal comes automatically, and also we offer a high-value 'Franconian' alternative in form of the food choice" 18. Close of meal in the oven 19. SOUNDBITE: (German) Esteban, customer "Something like this I've never seen before, that is the reason we're here now. It's very interesting. We wanted to try how it looks with ordering on the touchscreen and food sliding down" 20. Close up, meal on the plate 21. SOUNDBITE: (German) Michael Mack, Restaurant owner: "I was sitting on the bench at home which is between the kitchen and the table. I cooked a meal for my friends with multiple courses and spent all the time carrying the food over. At one point I thought that it would be ideal if the food came automatically." 22. Top shot, railing with the guests at the lower floor LEAD IN: Diners in Germany are being treated to a new experience in the city of Nuremberg. The restaurant, which is fully automated and has no waiting staff, gives customers the opportunity to select their own meal on a touch screen computer. STORYLINE: A restaurant in Germany is offering a novel dining experience. The eaterie, located in the city of Nuremberg, boasts a waiter-less service. Each diner walking into the restaurant is given a magnetic order card, and then left to their own devices. The food and drinks are chosen through the touch screen menu at the table, and the meal appears minutes later. Each dish slides down a set of spiral railings from the kitchen, that is found directly above the dinning hall. Once customers order their food, the chefs in the kitchen are alerted by a computer of the incoming order. From here on the kitchen works like any normal restaurant. Michael Mack is the owner and creator of the restaurant. He says the restaurant is a step up from the standard fast food eating experience. Guests at Baggers can so enjoy traditional German dishes like bratwurst and grilled pork. In addition, the eaterie serves international dishes like curry, curcuma and chili. One of the diners eating at the restaurant for the first time is Esteban. He says he's curious to see how the system works. Mack says the idea of having food served automatically came to him one day when he was organising a dinner party at his home. To further simplify the work flow, even the prices in Baggers are listed as 1,2,3 until 7 EUR (around $9 US Dollars). The touch screen order system in the restaurant is based on a specially developed software.
