On July 29, 1974, former Mamas & the Papas singer Cass Elliot tragically passed away at age 32 following a sold-out solo engagement at London's Palladium. When police inspected her room, they noticed an uneaten ham sandwich on the bedside table. Before a formal autopsy could be performed, her manager, Allan Carr, panicked. Fearing the era's harsh media scrutiny and desperate to prevent rumors of a illicit substance overdose, Carr instructed journalist and close friend Sue Cameron to report that Cass had choked on the sandwich. The autopsy later confirmed the truth: Cass Elliot died in her sleep from a sudden heart attack, with no illegal substances found in her system. Though invented in an impulsive attempt to protect her legacy, the "ham sandwich" myth exploded worldwide. Decades later, her daughter, Owen Elliot and rock historians continue to set the record straight to honor her true legacy as one of the greatest vocal powerhouses of the 1960s and '70s.
