Featured in The Wilderness Family, this Carolina Dreams cut still runs deep for MTB fans "I Should Have Never Started Lovin' You" is track three on The Marshall Tucker Band's 1977 album Carolina Dreams, sitting alongside the band's highest-charting single, "Heard It in a Love Song." The song carries the record's blend of heartbreak and groove, and it has stuck with longtime fans partly because of its unexpected pop-culture footprint: The Marshall Tucker Band has pointed to the track's connection to the film The Wilderness Family, a detail that still surfaces in fan conversation decades later. That kind of crossover moment was common for The Marshall Tucker Band in the mid-to-late 1970s, as the band's music found its way into film and television alongside its steady presence on Southern rock radio. Carolina Dreams remains one of the most acclaimed Southern rock albums of the 1970s, and deep cuts like this one are a reminder of how consistent the record was from front to back -- not just a vehicle for one hit single. Noted for incorporating blues, country and jazz into an eclectic sound, The Marshall Tucker Band helped establish the Southern rock genre in the early 1970s. The "Marshall Tucker" in the band's name does not refer to a band member, but rather to a blind piano tuner from Spartanburg. While the band was discussing possible band names one evening in an old warehouse they had rented for rehearsal space, someone noticed that the warehouse's door key had the name "Marshall Tucker" inscribed on it, and suggested they call themselves "The Marshall Tucker Band," not realizing it referred to an actual person. Lead vocalist Doug Gray remains the only original member still active with the band. Key songs include "Can't You See" and "Heard It In a Love Song." Carolina Dreams, released in 1977, is the band's fifth studio album for Capricorn Records and the record that produced their highest-charting single, "Heard It in a Love Song."
