Your RTX 3090 or RTX 4090 runs one kind of AI math at half speed, and NVIDIA prints it in its own whitepaper. The free gpu-unlock tool removes the limit, but whether your local LLM gets faster depends on one thing: which lane your software runs in. The RTX 4090's box says 1,321 AI TOPS. The 16-bit math with a 32-bit running total that AI software actually uses (BF16 and FP16 with FP32 accumulate) runs at 165. Three halvings sit between those numbers: sparsity, 16-bit inputs, and the GeForce lock. Only the last one is a limit NVIDIA chose. The RTX 3090 does 71 teraflops in that mode, while the RTX A6000, on the same GA102 chip, does 154.8. On October 18th, Zagitta released gpu-unlock, a free Linux kernel module that sets the card back to full rate before NVIDIA's driver loads. Nothing is flashed, and the driver is untouched. It now covers the RTX 30 series and the RTX 40 series (gpu-unlock-ada), plus the RTX 2080 Ti. In raw benchmarks, an RTX 3090 Ti went from 87.5 to 157.4 teraflops of BF16. Real-world gains are smaller, and this video measures where they land: - Ollama, LM Studio and llama.cpp with GGUF models: almost no change, because quantized GGUF runs on integer math that was never locked. The exception is FlashAttention at long context: +3% empty, +10% at 32K tokens, +17% at 100K. - 16-bit work (vLLM, image and video generation in ComfyUI and similar tools, fine-tuning and LoRA training): this is where the unlock pays. vLLM prefill got 25 to 50% faster, a 3060 image dropped from 18.09 to 11.01 seconds, and a 3090 video render went from 4:39 to 3:31. - Tokens per second while the model writes: flat (112.98 to 114.24 tok/s on a 3090), because writing speed is set by GPU memory bandwidth (936 GB/s on a 3090), and the unlock adds none. - A 96,000-token prompt on one RTX 3090 (vLLM, Qwen 3.8 27B, MTP speculative decoding): 105.7 to 71.4 seconds before the first word. - The free fix most people miss: a 3090 capped at 200 W wrote 50 tok/s at 3.97 J per token, against 76.4 tok/s at 3.15 J at 250 W. Also covered: what the unlock costs you (Secure Boot off, an unsigned module exploiting NVIDIA's own firmware, the Windows UEFI version), why the RTX 5090 has the same halving but no fix, and why gaming FPS, DLSS and VRAM don't change.
