India and Pakistan are in a conflict... and they’re refusing to meet and negotiate on this point even thought it will help them both... This conflict is not over Water, or Land, or Cricket... but over Rice... Currently, there is a lot of fake Basmati selling in the world... mostly because Basmati typically sells for almost 2X the price of other white rice... and even larger premium in markets of Europe... And brown basmati rice also enjoys tariff free status in the EU market... Currently, people from several parts of the world are trying to leverage on this opportunity by selling so called ā€œBasmatiā€ rice into Europe, even though the Basmati variety grows only in the Indo-Gangetic plains of Punjab, Haryana, Western UP, Himachal and Kashmir... The one way to stop fake sellers is to get a GI tag or a Geographical Indicator, which is a certification that validates that the rice coming is from Punjab... Till the time Basmati does not have a registered GI tag, we can’t stop others from calling their rice Basmati... So India filed an application in 2018 to get the GI tag... but Pakistan objected it and filed its own claim against India... saying that Basmati was grown much before India and Pakistan were created as nations and they want the GI tag of the rice... The solution can be that a Joint GI tag can be taken by both countries, which will help them access unrestricted rice to foreign markets and prevent fake Basmati... it grows the pie for both countries... India exported over USD 5.6 Bn of Basmati last year, and this number could really grow... Now here comes the problem... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Like, Share, Subscribe for more!
