Indian Star Tortoise Baby Care INDIAN STAR TORTOISES Indian star tortoises are easily recognizable by their beautifully star-patterned shells. Typically shy and small, relative to other tortoises, they prefer natural sunlight and life outdoors but can adapt to indoor living with adequate heat, lighting, and humidity. Indian star tortoises are native to the arid climates in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, and are accustomed to monsoon seasons. If their environment isn't right, they are prone to illness.1 These tortoises are pretty to look at, not big on handling, and are difficult pets to keep. INDIAN STAR TORTOISE CARE Indian star tortoises originate from the semi-arid dry grasslands of Indian subcontinent. They can be easily recognised by the distinctive star pattern on their bumpy carapace. Star tortoises are very sensitive to their environmental conditions and so not recommended for novice tortoise owners. It is important to note that these tortoises do not hibernate. WHAT TO FEED • In the wild, Indian star tortoises eat mainly grasses and fibrous plant material. In captivity their diet therefore, should consist largely of grasses and hay, with vegetation such as weeds making up the remainder of the diet. They also favour the fruit and pads of the prickly pear (Opuntia sp.), succulents and thistles. Suitable weeds include sow thistles, dandelions, milk thistles, plantains, chickweed, dock and bindweed. Other plants and flowers such as sedum, hibiscus, nasturtium and honeysuckle are also suitable. Any plants fed should be free of any pesticides or fertilizer. Vegetables should only be offered if these are not available as they may result in diarrhoea. • Supplementation is important, particularly with supermarket bought goods and a vitamin and mineral powder with high calcium content is required. It is important to ensure the phosphorous content is low. Cuttlefish is often fed to tortoises and although it is to be encouraged it should not be relied upon as a calcium source. • Water should always be available and a container is required which will allow the tortoise to submerge completely. This should be changed daily. Bathing is also to be encouraged and twice a week the tortoise should be placed in a shallow bath of warm water (usually a cat litter tray suffices). Food and Water Star tortoises are herbivores. Give plenty of fresh and dark leafy greens and grasses. Timothy hay, Bermuda grass, orchard grass, ryegrass, alfalfa, and fescue are all acceptable. Never feed your Indian star tortoise dog or cat food. Fresh greens suitable for tortoises include kale, endive, parsley, dandelion greens, escarole, spineless cactus leaves, and mustard greens; these greens have a higher calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, which is healthier for the star tortoise. Dust an additional calcium powder on their greens daily. Occasionally, you can offer a small bit of fruit as a treat. Feed it once daily at the same time every day from several food trays spread throughout the enclosure to replicate foraging. Give them as much food as they will eat within 15 to 30 minutes, or you can estimate the pile of food to offer as about the size of the animal's shell. Change and clean its water container daily and replenish it with filtered water, if available. Choosing Your Indian Star Tortoise Star tortoises are long-lived pets that require a long-term commitment. Depending on when you get your pet and its age, it may outlive you. Some pet owners make arrangements for their pet tortoises in their wills. If you are set on an Indian star tortoise, your best source will be a reputable breeder. For a local lead on a breeder, inquire at a nearby exotics veterinarian, ask your area reptile rescue, or meet breeders at a regional reptile expo. tortoise, animal, pet, care, turtle, nature, vet, reptile, veterinary, wildlife, paw, pets, food, cute, closeup, puppy, slow, bone, set, love, kitty, wild, grooming, icon, stethoscope, tail, cage, natural, background, collar, grass, tropical, print, kitten, hamster, hospital, veterinarian, cat, environment, friendly, star tortoise in india tortoise indian star indian tortoise reptiles star tortoise care star tortoise in india tortoise indian star indian star tortoise lifespan tortoise care tortoise care guide tortoise care sheet tortoise care 101 tortoise care tips tortoise care near me tortoise care in winter tortoise care instructions tortoise care list tortoise care while on holiday Indian Star Tortoise: Care Guide & Species #tortoise, #animal, #pet, #care, #turtle, #nature, #vet, #reptile, #veterinary, #wildlife, #paw, #pets, #food, #cute, #closeup, #puppy, #slow, #bone, #set, #love, #kitty, #wild, #grooming, #icon, #stethoscope, #tail, #cage, #natural, #background, #collar, #grass, #tropical, #print, #kitten, #hamster, #hospital, #veterinarian, #cat, #environment, #friendly
