🔥 Ear pain, but your ear doctor says everything looks normal? The problem might actually be coming from your JAW or NECK! Your ear shares sensory nerve pathways with your jaw and upper neck, meaning irritation in one area can sometimes cause pain that feels like it's coming directly from your ear. 💡 Here's what's happening: ⚡ Upper ear pain → Auriculotemporal nerve This nerve branches from the trigeminal nerve near your jaw and provides sensation around the TMJ, upper ear, and temple. Irritation around the TMJ can sometimes refer pain into these areas. ⚡ Lower ear pain → Great auricular nerve This nerve originates from the C2–C3 cervical nerves and travels around the SCM muscle toward the lower ear and area behind it. Irritation along this pathway may contribute to pain around the ear. 🛠️ Try these 2 exercises: ✅ STEP 1: Upper neck release Place your hands behind your head and gently lift upward. While maintaining that lift, slowly tilt your head side to side, using the opposite hand to assist the movement. This may help reduce tension around the upper cervical region and improve comfort along the great auricular nerve pathway. ✅ STEP 2: Jaw muscle control Open your mouth slightly and place your fingertips underneath your chin. Apply gentle upward resistance for 10 seconds, keeping your mouth slightly open without allowing it to close. This activates the muscles underneath your jaw and challenges TMJ control without requiring large jaw movements. 🔥 Why this matters: Sometimes the location of your pain isn't where the irritation is coming from. If your ear has been evaluated and no ear-related cause was found, your TMJ and upper cervical spine may be worth assessing. The goal is to address the surrounding structures that may be contributing to it. Persistent ear pain, new hearing changes, drainage, or worsening symptoms should be medically evaluated. #EarPain #TMJ #JawPain #NeckPain #AuriculotemporalNerve #GreatAuricularNerve #PhysicalTherapy
