Extra teeth, missing teeth, peg laterals and shovel-shaped teeth: an orthodontist on rare teeth traits you might have without knowing. Orthodontist Dr. Ben Winters walks through unusual teeth, starting in the middle and working out. Plenty of them were decided before you were born and run in families: about one in five people never grow one of their wisdom teeth, and most don't know until a dentist tells them. A gap between the front teeth is normal in young kids and usually closes as the other teeth come in, but one that won't close in an adult can be caused by an extra tooth stuck in the bone (a mesiodens). The opposite happens too: a missing side tooth, a lateral incisor, often with a baby tooth hanging on in its place, or a tiny pointed peg lateral. He explains the options for each, from canine substitution or an implant to building the tooth up after braces. Then the traits you can feel with your tongue: shovel-shaped front teeth, a talon cusp that can carry part of the nerve inside it, the rare double tooth (fusion or gemination), retained baby teeth in adults, and canines that wander into the roof of the mouth, which is a big reason to have kids seen by an orthodontist around age seven. • A gap between the front teeth is common in young kids and usually closes on its own. • An adult gap that won't close can be caused by a hidden extra tooth. • A missing or very small side tooth often runs in families and can be linked to canine problems. • A talon cusp can hold part of the nerve, so it is reduced slowly, not ground off at once. • Catching a wandering canine early can be as simple as removing the baby canine.
