A few weeks ago, I published a diagnostic video explaining why the engine was not turning properly and investigating the cause of the failure. • The inspection revealed a severely stretched timing chain. It had become so loose that it started wearing away the oil jet responsible for lubricating the timing chain above the crankshaft. The timing chain appears to have jumped, causing the valve timing marks to become misaligned. But what damage has this caused inside the engine? • In this episode, we begin dismantling the Renault 1.6 dCi R9M diesel engine. The engine has already been removed from the vehicle. First, we remove the auxiliary components and fuel system parts before moving on to the timing chain and its drive components. • Once the timing chain and the necessary components are removed, we can access the camshaft carrier. This needs to be dismantled so we can inspect the rocker arms and check for internal damage. When the timing chain jumps and the valve timing becomes incorrect, the valve train can suffer serious damage. The rocker arms may be broken, bent or otherwise damaged. • Have the rocker arms survived, or has the timing failure caused extensive damage to the cylinder head?
