This is the 9 game streak that turned Kobe Bryant into a legend. After missing time for his big toe surgery, Shaq was finally back, and the Lakers were clawing to get their record even by early February in 2003. So from that point on, the 24 year old Bryant made sure they never looked back, putting the team on his shoulders. Kobe explodes down the baseline for one of the best dunks of his career! He was cooking Sprewell from anywhere on the court. Kobe and Shaq combined for 39 of the Lakers' 60 points in the 1st half, going up by 15 in MSG. But no one could’ve foreseen what would happen in the 3rd period because… Bean went ballistic on the Knicks in the 3rd quarter, racking up 22 points on a sizzling 9 of 13 shooting from the field. He matched the scoring of the entire New York team all by himself. Spree couldn’t believe it on the bench. I mean you can’t blame him, the stuff Kobe was doing was pretty amazing. By the end of the 3rd, the Lakers were up by 30 while Bryant had scored 40 out of his 46 points. For LA, they were back on their winning tracks, and for Kobe it was a start of something special. Next up, the Denver Nuggets at home, who were absolutely clueless on how to stop Bryant. Mid-range, dunks, 3’s you name it! The young Mamba put his full arsenal on display for the home fans, taking a 13 point lead at the half. And coming out of the locker rooms, another eruption followed! Kobe loses the defender with the behind the back dribble before the one handed throwdown. He gave us another iconic dunk in back-to-back games. But the show wasn’t over yet! Back in his athletic prime, Kob was a menace on the defensive end, averaging 2.2 steals per night in 2003. He scored 19 of his 42 points in the 3rd, icing the game way before the final period even started. Unfortunately for the Nuggets, they had to play him again the very next day in Denver. And Kobe was still deep in his groove. Bryant bursted out of the gates, scoring 20 of LA’s 26 points and 5 more than the entire Nuggets squad. And he kept torching them in the 2nd quarter as well. It wasn’t fair honestly. Get this! At the half Kobe had 36 of LA’s 70 points and the Nuggets had just 38. It was absurd. This was his first 50 burger of the season, and he made sure to finish the job in the 3rd period, so he can rest in the final frame. Next came the Spurs who were LA’s kryptonite that season. Regardless, Kobe showed up and showed out! Bryant was a one man wrecking crew, responsible for 23 of his team's 36 points in the midst of the 2nd quarter. Whether it was poor old Steve Kerr, Manu Ginobili or even the defensive specialist Bruce Bowen, it didn’t matter, Kobe was hitting shot after shot like they weren’t there. Stephen Jackson tried to make a difference in the 2nd half, but to no avail. And although Kobe continued his hot scoring streak of 4 games above 40, the Lakers lost to the Spurs and the MVP of that season, Tim Duncan who fought back with a monster 28 & 20 performance. 2 days later, the Knicks came to Los Angeles for a rematch and Bryant had to carry his team once again, ‘cuz Shaq was out with knee soreness. No Shaq? No Problem… Are you kidding me? Everything was going Kobe’s way so he started experimenting… Look at him palming the ball and completely fake out Sprewell before draining the fadeaway. Exquisite footwork! Still, the Lakers played from behind all night long, ‘cuz on the other end Allan Houston just happened to play the game of his career! Yeah, he made Kobe’s 40 piece go to waste with a personal best of 53 points on a blistering 62% efficiency, leading the Knicks to the victory. This is a legendary battle that deserves a video of its own, so we move on to the next one.
