The "Vanished" Wheel That NASCAR Never Explained? | JD McDuffie's Final Race On August 11, 1991, NASCAR independent JD McDuffie died on the fifth lap of the Budweiser at The Glen when the left-front wheel tore off his No. 70 Pontiac at the fastest corner on Watkins Glen International. The wheel that caused the crash — the single most important piece of evidence — vanished from NASCAR custody and was never returned to his family. NASCAR never explained it. This is the full story of JD McDuffie's final race, the lost wheel, and the safety warning the sport ignored for ten years. JD McDuffie was the last true privateer in Winston Cup — a Sanford, North Carolina racer running used parts, borrowed money, and a 21-year-old ramp truck against million-dollar corporate teams. Five months before he died, Dale Earnhardt and Richard Childress passed a hat through the Daytona garage to buy him an engine. By the time he reached Watkins Glen, he was driving an eight-year-old, ex-Earnhardt Wrangler chassis with a pop rivet plugging the brake line of his own hauler. Here's the part almost no one talks about: McDuffie was the first NASCAR Cup driver of the modern era to die of a basilar skull fracture — the same injury that would later kill Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin Jr., Tony Roper, and Dale Earnhardt himself. The HANS head-and-neck device was already on the market the year McDuffie died in 1991. NASCAR didn't mandate it until October 2001 — ten years and four more drivers later. We cover his entire career, his only career pole at Dover in 1978, the lap-5 crash at Turn 5 (the Loop), the wheel that disappeared, the autopsy and the family's dispute over how he really died, Ima Jean McDuffie's $4.25 million lawsuit against NASCAR and Watkins Glen, the bus-stop chicane the track quietly built right afterward, and the safety timeline that ties his death directly to Dale Earnhardt's.
