Ukrainian drone strikes against Russian data centers sparked viral claims about a sudden drop in Russian influence operations on social media — even as experts see no evidence to support this. ⠀ Kyiv struck data centers run by Yandex — Russia’s “answer to Google” — in three different regions between Oct. 9 and 11, a response to Russian strikes against similar facilities in Ukraine. ⠀ Yandex acknowledged the attacks, noting that its data center in Vladimir Oblast had to be shut down due to damage and reported disruptions to various online services within Russia. ⠀ Soon after, commentators on social media began reporting an alleged decrease in activity by “Russian bots” online, linking this to Ukrainian strikes on Yandex. ⠀ President Volodymyr Zelensky even alluded to this in his address to the Warsaw Security Forum, saying it is “a little easier to breathe on many social media platforms.” ⠀ Yet beyond anecdotal examples circulating online, there is no data showing that the attacks on Yandex disrupted Moscow-backed disinformation and influence operations. ⠀ At least some of the claims appear to stem from a simple confusion of terms.
