This Show & Tell video goes through three generations of handsets used on the Vietnam-era PRC-25 and PRC-77 backpack radios. Starting with the H-138: Issued in 1962, the H-138 featured a noise cancelling microphone and no hook on the back of the handset for attaching to backpack straps. This is the handset used by Lt. Col. Hal Moore in the battle of la Drang in 1965. Interesting trivia is that the wrong handset (an H-189) was used by Mel Gibson in the movie "We Were Soldiers" which was based on this famous battle. The H-189 replaced the H-138 around October 1966. The H-189 no longer supported noise cancelling, but it did allow for field replacement of the earpiece and mouthpiece. This handset variant also incorporated a hook on the back of the receiver. The H-250 replaced the H-189 around 1987, and it reintroduced noise cancelling technology into the mouthpiece. Both the mouthpiece and earpiece were sealed units, so they were not repairable in the field.
