We are standing at the mouth of the Ganges Delta, the largest delta in the world. What you see in the video—that sharp line dividing the muddy brown water and the deep blue ocean—is a geographical marvel. The brown color comes from the millions of tons of nutrient-rich sediment that the Ganga carries all the way from the Himalayas, depositing it here in the Bay of Bengal to create new land. This confluence is known as the "Sagardwip." 🕉️ THE MYTHOLOGY: THE CURSE & THE LIBERATION Why is this specific spot so holy? The legend goes back to ancient times. King Sagara of the Ikshvaku dynasty performed an Ashwamedha Yajna (Horse Sacrifice) to prove his supremacy. Lord Indra, fearing the King’s power, stole the horse and hid it in the ashram of Sage Kapil Muni, who was in deep meditation. When King Sagara’s 60,000 sons found the horse and disturbed the sage, Kapil Muni opened his eyes in anger and burnt them all to ashes. Their souls were trapped, unable to attain Moksha (liberation). Generations later, King Bhagiratha performed severe penance to bring Goddess Ganga down from the heavens to wash over the ashes of his ancestors. It is said that Ganga flowed all the way here, to this island, to liberate those 60,000 souls before merging into the ocean (Sagar). 🛕 HISTORY & BELIEF: "SAB TEERTH BAAR BAAR..." There is a famous saying in India: "Sab Teerth Baar Baar, Ganga Sagar Ek Baar" (You may visit other pilgrimages many times, but Ganga Sagar needs to be visited just once). This highlights the immense spiritual weight of this place. The Kapil Muni Temple, which stands here today, marks the spot of that ancient legend. Every year during Makar Sankranti, millions of devotees gather here for the holy dip, making it the second largest congregation of humanity after the Kumbh Mela.
