Astronomers think they’ve found a supermassive black hole that was thrown out of its own galaxy, and it’s leaving a trail of newborn stars behind it. Black holes are supposed to be where stars end. This one seems to be making them. It’s racing away at nearly 1,000 kilometers per second, which is Earth to the Moon in about seven minutes, and it weighs at least ten million Suns. You can’t see it, but you can see its wake. In 2023, Yale astronomer Pieter van Dokkum spotted a thin straight streak in a Hubble image and assumed it was a cosmic ray hitting the camera. It stayed after the cosmic rays were removed. The streak is 200,000 light-years long, about twice the width of the Milky Way, and it’s made of young stars. In late 2025, van Dokkum’s team pointed the James Webb Space Telescope at the tip of the streak and found a bow shock, a shockwave like the one in front of a speeding ship. The black hole is plowing through thin gas and compressing it. Behind it, the gas piles up, cools and collapses into stars. The leading idea for how it was thrown out is that two galaxies merged and their black holes paired up, then a third galaxy brought a third black hole, and the three-way tug slingshotted one out. It’s still a candidate, and the Webb result is a preprint that hasn’t been peer reviewed yet. But if it holds, it would be the first evidence of a runaway supermassive black hole.
