After 30 years in business, last week Bioware announced that it was permanently shutting its doors. At one point in time, Bioware was the GOAT. They created some of the most beloved RPGs ever and pioneered gameplay and storytelling formulas that are still being used in the industry today. They were the kings of worldbuilding - crafting compelling universes with interesting characters, meaningful choices and fun gameplay. For nearly two decades, if you saw the Bioware logo on the box art of a new video game, you knew you were about to play a banger. But for the last ten years, the studio has been in a steep decline - producing failed game after failed game. Mass Effect Andromeda, Anthem and finally Dragon Age The Veilguard showed that Bioware had lost its mojo. Despite having a dedicated audience that was willing to give them chance after chance, post-2015 Bioware was simply no longer capable of producing the kind of games that we fell in love with back in the day. The unfortunate reality is this: the Bioware we RPG fans once loved died many years ago. Last week’s announcement was just the final nail in the coffin. The people who made some of the greatest RPGs of all-time like KOTOR, Dragon Age Origins, Dragon Age Inquisition and the original Mass Effect Trilogy left the studio a long time ago. Casey Hudson, David Gaider, Drew Karpyshyn, Mac Walters and many other talented developers quit their jobs at Bioware and moved on to other ventures. In this video, we’re going to explore the full story of Bioware - starting with what made their games so special in the first place - and then analyzing the factors which contributed to their downfall.
