A leather jacket, a peaked cap, and the cold steel of a Nagant revolver, this is the enduring image of the early Soviet secret police. From classic films to modern historical dramas, this shadowy silhouette of the Cheka officer has been burned into popular imagination. Yet behind the cinematic myth lies a surprisingly pragmatic reality. Was the iconic leather jacket ever an official uniform? Prior to the Russian Revolution, leather coats were worn exclusively by those who mastered machines: drivers, mechanics and aviators. The reasoning was purely practical. Leather was virtually indestructible. It blocked biting winds, shed heavy rain, and repelled oil and grease. Unlike standard-issue wool coats, which quickly ruined in the field, a leather jacket could simply be wiped clean. Because high-quality leather was expensive and scarce, wearing it immediately signaled a person’s technical expertise or elevated status. When the Russian Empire collapsed and the Russian Civil War erupted, the Bolsheviks created the Cheka. This was the secret police created to protect the revolution. During the chaotic early years a Cheka officer wore whatever he could get his hands on. Some wore standard army surplus, others wore civilian overcoats, and many seized whatever supplies remained in imperial warehouses. Among those captured imperial stockpiles were thousands of unused leather jackets. Because they were durable and available in captured depots, these pre-revolutionary leather coats were rapidly issued to commanders, political commissars, and Cheka operatives. By 1919, photographs of Bolshevik leaders and secret police officers lined in black leather began to circulate widely. Though the Cheka had no official uniform throughout most of the Civil War, the leather jacket quickly became its unwritten trademark. It offered a stark aesthetic that matched the uncompromising spirit of the new regime: rugged, modern, and instantly recognizable. Ultimately, the iconic Soviet leather jacket was never born out of an official military design studio. It was born out of wartime necessity, an accidental uniform that became the ultimate symbol of revolutionary authority. SOURCE https://sovietuniform.com/nkvd-leather-jackets-cheka-history/
