The Bin Laden Mansion, so named due to its association with Osama bin Laden who orchestrated the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, was constructed in 1928 by William Pratt, the co-inventor of Jello. Previously owned by the President of Tupperware, the estate is located on Johns Lake in Oakland and comprises a five-bedroom, seven-bathroom mansion and a four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom in-laws house. In December 1980, Khalil bin Laden, one of Osama's siblings, purchased the property for his wife as a wedding gift through his Florida company, Desert Bear, for $1.6 million. The mansion was then known as "Desert Bear." After the 9/11 attacks, Khalil and many of his family members left the U.S. due to safety concerns, despite having connections to a region known for terrorism and inquiries about bringing in Arabs to attend a Florida flight school. He was never implicated in the attacks. The mansion was left vacant and suffered damage from vandals before being sold in 2006 to Aleem Hussain, who was later convicted of a $9 million real estate scam. The property was foreclosed and sold to Johns Lake Investment Group, and then to John LeClair, who made a lease-purchase agreement but abandoned the property after taking deposits for weddings and was ordered to make restitution. In 2014, Gary and Dana English bought the property for $2 million and attempted to sell a portion of the land for a luxury apartment complex, but city commissioners rejected the proposal. The Englishs filed for bankruptcy, and the property was foreclosed upon in 2019 and resold to Cornerstone Group Development LLC for $7.7 million. The future of the mansion remains uncertain.
