When the Nest thermostat first came out in 2012, I was excited for the level of functionality (primarily through the use of the app) it offered. It wasn't cheap at almost $300, but the cool factor was off the map for homeowner nerds! Haven't had an issue in 13 years. Fast forward to 2025. The now parent company of Nest (was SO bummed when the "shall do no evil" company purchased Nest years ago) sends out an email saying the app for Gen1/2 thermostats will be turned off and no longer supported, but your thermostat will sill work as a standalone unit. Ummmm, I didn't purchase a standalone thermostat, that's what I replaced with my app enabled Nest thermostat. Clearly a money play. We are happy to offer you a discount on the purchase a NEW version of the Nest thermostat (which we will also discontinue support from whenever we want or need to). Umm, my Gen 1 Nest works fine...only now without the app support that I originally purchased. So I have to discard a perfectly fine functioning device if I want app support. Ah...no. That's dirty business! They won't be seeing any more of my $$.
