It is the first time X-Plane has genuinely felt busy. The Wright Flyer is missing almost everything an airliner needs. So I added it. It had no landing gear, because it was fired off a wooden rail and landed on its skids, so I bolted some on. It had no instruments beyond an anemometer, so it got a pair of iPads standing in for navigation screens. It had no radio and no transponder, which makes filing a flight plan slightly difficult, so those went on too. It still has no lights, no electrical system and no trim, and the radio is powered by an iPad battery. Then I ran into the real problem. The whole aircraft can carry about 63 kilograms, and that includes the pilot. The fuel tank holds 1.4 kilograms. So before I could even think about passengers, I had to work out whether a human being could physically come along. One could. Just about. So we flew it as a scheduled service: Newark to LaGuardia, as Lufthansa 1738, with a real clearance, a real departure procedure, real controllers and one very exposed passenger sitting out in the open air. Top speed turned out to be 30 knots. There is no trim, so you cannot let go of the controls for more than about four seconds. It only really stays airborne in ground effect. In any actual wind it simply refuses to fly, so the wind had to go. And it ran out of fuel twice, the second time on short final into runway 31. Converting the first aeroplane ever built into an airliner is possible. It is just an extremely bad idea. â±ïž Chapters 0:07 What The Wright Flyer Actually Was 0:47 Everything It Was Missing 1:43 Turning It Into An Airliner 1:57 Step One: Landing Gear 2:13 Step Two: iPads And Navigation 2:37 Step Three: A Radio And A Transponder 2:53 Can It Even Carry A Passenger? 4:07 SayIntentions Living World 4:53 Filing The Flight Plan 5:48 A Real Clearance For A 1903 Aeroplane 7:14 Taxiing Among The 757s 10:26 It Will Not Take Off 11:08 Deleting The Wind 11:30 Flying In Ground Effect 13:39 Climbing To 1000 Feet 17:00 Crossing New York 19:08 Approach Into LaGuardia 21:46 Running Out Of Fuel On Final 22:03 Did It Work?
