This is Hashima Island. It’s just a tiny patch of concrete off the coast of Japan and it’s one of the strangest places on Earth. In 1959, it was quite literally the most densely populated place on the planet. It had schools, apartments, markets, and more, all tightly packed behind these concrete walls. Then beneath it ran a network of tunnels extending deep under the surrounding ocean. Men worked these tunnels in heat and darkness with the seabed above their heads. As dangerous as that was, though, the mine wasn't the darkest part of life there. In this video, we’re going to go over the dark history behind the island, the strange lives of the people who lived on it, and below it, and how one of the most densely populated places on Earth became completely abandoned.
