For some reason, when The Great Muppet Caper was reissued on home video in 1993, it had a number of changes made to the audio track. To my knowledge these changes have carried over to every release after that as well, up to the most recent version of the film on Disney+. Here I've compiled a rundown of the changes made. Any copy released before 1993 should have this same cut. I would guess the original laserdisc would have the best quality if anyone wanted to rip it (according to muppet wiki it's even open matte!) - I don't have a laserdisc player myself though. For the post-1993 edit I used the DVD that came with the 2013 "Of Pirates & Pigs" collection simply because I thought it looked good enough, and my laptop doesn't have a blu-ray drive so it was the quickest way to get a copy of the movie to work with. It's the same transfer that's on the Blu-ray though. If you're wondering why some of these changes were made - well, so am I! I wish I had an answer but I don't even know who was responsible for them since the re-edit wasn't released until after Henson's death. Most of the changes I'm personally indifferent towards, and I actually think the new audio mixing during the instrumental section of Happiness Hotel sounds a lot better. I went over my issues with the Night Life edit in the video, but the "Renoir" edit also bugs me because it's another addition that clashes with the way the film was originally edited - it cuts to next shot in the middle of Animal's line, and you can see him in the background, very clearly not shouting anything! Those two bits in particular were moments that stood out to me as being awkwardly edited the very first time I watched the movie, before I was even aware anything had been changed. Worth noting is that on the soundtrack and in the July 22, 1980 draft of the script, Zoot says Animal missed the Monet exhibit, and Animal does not respond. Obviously Zoot's line was changed to Rembrandt before it was filmed, so maybe they added and recorded the "Renoir" line at that time as well but then they cut it when they realized it didn't edit together well, or just thought it was unnecessary? Like, I can't imagine they'd ask Frank Oz to come back and record a single word for a re-release 12 years later. At the end of the shot everyone suddenly turns to the right, so it does make most sense that they're supposed to be reacting to something. I think the insertion of the Renoir line could have been less awkward if they had extended that first shot a bit rather than only changing the audio. One last thing and then I'll stop rambling - I initially wanted to avoid paying for a VHS copy by using a recording of a 1986 TV airing I found on Myspleen instead. Only problem was, that copy may not have had the 1993 edits present, but it was trimmed for time in some of the relevant scenes. An interesting thing that I noticed with it though is that in shortening the Happiness Hotel number, it inadvertently fixes that editing issue by cutting from Zoot's line straight to Animal's second drum solo, giving them a different reason to be turning their heads. I love the music in this movie so I obviously prefer to see it with the full version of the song, but *strictly* from an editing perspective, I have to admit that cutting that part shorter does make it flow better.
