Like the sound of an old characteristic ‘felt piano’. As my piano doesn’t have felt, I placed all sorts of materials in between the hammers and the strings of the piano. Sweaters, towels, curtains, but in the end one particular dishcloth sounded exactly as we wished. We also had in mind to record the sound of the wooden hammers ticking on the piano, and thus we placed an extra set of microphones very close to the wooden keys. You can clearly hear this on the recording and it adds a rhythmic layer, almost like a typing writer playing along, emphasizing the repetitive character of the song. The song is almost minimal, driven by repetitive notes and harmonies. In the B-part more drama is introduced and the harmony evaluates and changes, switching from minor to major and adding diminished chords, giving this part a ‘Bach-like’ feel. I played as soft as I could and with the microphones super close to the piano you can even hear my fingernails hitting the keys at certain moments. I really love using these kind of recording techniques to make sure the listener can be as close to the music as I was during the recording. I hope you all enjoy!
