When the Xbox 360 launched in 2005, Microsoft sold two versions of it. The Core cost three hundred dollars and came with a wired controller and no hard drive. The Pro cost a hundred more and came with a wireless pad and a hard drive clipped onto the top. From the front they looked identical, except Microsoft gave the Pro a chrome disc tray and left the Core’s plain white, so you could tell which one someone had paid for from across the room. The hard drive was the real difference. Without it the Core couldn’t play original Xbox games, couldn’t store downloads, and couldn’t even save a game until you bought a separate memory card, so the cheaper console kept asking for money after you’d taken it home.
