On June 26, 2026, Martha Ann Lillard died at 78 in Shawnee, Oklahoma — the last American who relied on an iron lung to breathe. She contracted polio on June 17, 1953, nine days after her fifth birthday. She lived for 73 years inside the machine that kept her alive.
