The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), which its political critics have often labelled the “hatchet party,” is now being accused of escalating to what they call a “gun culture.” Amid preparations for local body elections, allegations have emerged that YSRCP brought rowdy elements from Karnataka to create disturbances near the nomination centre in Punganur and later brought a group of alleged professional criminals from Punjab to the nomination centre in Rayachoti. Last Friday, the group reportedly arrived alongside a YSRCP candidate and created a tense situation near the Rayachoti nomination centre. There are allegations that the group intended to intimidate the public and opposition supporters using unlicensed firearms and illegal weapons. The incident has caused considerable concern among local residents. Responding swiftly, police reportedly conducted extensive searches and seized two pistols, ammunition and other weapon-related materials from the group. More than ten members of an alleged interstate gang suspected of possessing illegal weapons were taken into custody. Officials stated that strict security measures had been implemented to prevent any further disruption to law and order in the area. Meanwhile, allegations of clashes and violence have emerged from several other parts of Andhra Pradesh during the nomination process. Across the erstwhile Kadapa district, the filing of nominations has reportedly taken place amid heightened tensions. At the Gandhi Nagar School nomination centre in Kadapa city, TDP and YSRCP supporters allegedly attacked each other with stones. Reports also claim that a large number of YSRCP supporters gathered at the location, threw chilli powder at TDP workers and pelted them with stones. In Rajampet, supporters of YSRCP MLA Amarnath Reddy reportedly arrived at a nomination centre carrying sticks and stones. TDP supporters allegedly attempted to stop them, resulting in a tense confrontation. In Emmiganur, Kurnool district, the municipal chairperson's post has reportedly triggered serious internal divisions within the YSRCP camp. The party is said to be divided between the groups led by Rajiv Reddy and Butta Renuka. While Dr. Raghu filed his nomination as the party's officially declared candidate for municipal chairperson, former vice-chairperson Nazeer Ahmed filed his nomination representing the Butta Renuka faction. This development has sparked discussion in political circles about internal differences within the party. Meanwhile, in Chittoor, police have imposed Section 144 near the municipal corporation election nomination centre as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incidents.
