The rear service brakes operate hydraulically through the brake calipers, while the parking brake uses a separate drum-style shoe mechanism located inside the rear brake disc. • The adjustment is made using a small star-wheel adjuster and threaded mechanism. Turning the adjuster changes the mechanism’s effective length, moving the parking brake shoes farther apart or bringing them closer together to set the correct clearance between the shoes and the inside surface of the brake disc. • To make the mechanism easier to understand, I have cut away part of a brake disc for demonstration purposes. In normal use, the adjuster is accessed through a threaded wheel-bolt hole, allowing the parking brake to be adjusted without cutting or removing part of the disc. • The correct adjustment procedure is to gradually expand the shoes until they contact the inside of the brake disc and prevent it from turning freely. Then, shorten the adjuster gradually to bring the shoes back together until the disc can rotate freely without binding. • This method helps establish the correct clearance and ensures proper operation of the parking brake mechanism.
