DESCRIPTION Electric cars, servo drives, heat pumps and wind turbines all rely on the same machine: the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). Three smooth sine-wave currents make a magnetic field that rotates around the stator, and the rotor magnets simply follow it. In this 3D animation we take one apart, see the magnetic field in 3D and in a 2D cross-section, and follow the control idea that keeps the field exactly 90° ahead of the rotor. IN THIS VIDEO YOU WILL LEARN • Where PMSMs are used, and why they are so popular in electric vehicles • The main parts: 24-slot stator, three-phase winding, rotor with buried V-shaped magnets, shaft, resolver • How three sine currents, 120° apart, make one rotating magnetic field • Why the torque depends on the angle between the stator and rotor fields • What reluctance torque is, and why a current angle of about 20° (MTPA) gives the most torque per ampere • How the resolver and field-oriented control keep the field 90° ahead of the rotor • Why sinusoidal control gives smoother torque than six-step BLDC drive • How to set torque and speed, and how to reverse the motor • The pros and cons CHAPTERS 0:00 Intro 0:16 The plan 0:22 Where PMSMs are used 0:42 Components 1:46 The physics (poles, rotating field, torque angle, reluctance) 2:52 How it works (5 easy steps) 4:39 Pros and cons 5:09 What you learned 5:59 Like, subscribe and comment COLOUR CODE USED IN THE VIDEO Orange = magnet field of the rotor · Blue = field of the stator currents · Red/Blue = N/S poles · Pink, teal, purple = phases A, B, C · Blue to red in the cross-section = flux density in the iron (estimate) QUESTION FOR YOU Which motor should I animate next? Stepper, induction, or switched reluctance? Tell me in the comments!
