Voodoo is much misunderstood in the West. This short film provides a fascinating look at the state religion of Benin, an animistic religion with thousands of years of history Filmed February 2026 in Abomey, Dassa, Cové, Bopa, Ouidah (Benin) Jonathan Wheeler @TravelObscurer www.jonathanwheelerfilms.co.uk With thanks to Young Pioneer Tours The nation of Benin is the birthplace and spiritual home of Vodun (Voodoo) where it is recognised as an official religion, an official religion practiced by approximately 60% of the population (although many are also Christian or Muslim). Far removed from inaccurate Hollywood stereotypes, it is a complex, 400-year-old spiritual system centered on nature, ancestors, and a supreme being (Mahou/Mawu/Mawu-Lisa), For its followersVoodoo is is a complete way of life, including culture, philosophy, language, art, dance, music and medicine. The Voodoo spiritual world consists of the supreme being and about 100 divinities - or Voodoos - who represent different phenomena, such as war and blacksmiths ), illness, healing and earth , storms, lightning and justice or water . The film features an Egungun ceremony in the town of Cové. Egunguns are a type of Yoruba ancestor veneration and an Egungun is the most frequently seen spirit in Benin. Ancesters communicate through Egunguns and messages can be benign or violent. It is dangerous to touch an Egungun. If the Egungun has a message for you he will track you down wherever you hide! A trance is brought on in Voodoo ceremonies through the repetitive beat of drums and other musical instruments as eel as chants until finally the god or spirit is summoned and enters into one of the performer's human body. The spirit can then make the body dance in a manic fashion for hours on end.  Lke the priests of Christianity or the Mullahs of Islam, Voodoo priests are seen as ritual leaders in their villages and tribes who oversee most religious matters and ceremonies. People become priests through either a divine calling, vocation or training. Most religious figures are gifted with magical powers that can be used for both good and bad purposes. Priests are called on to communicate with spirits in order to ask for different types of help, such as the protection or curing of a person. Amulets, and charms are important for magic - often made of dried and mangled-up animal parts found in the fetish markets. I Sacrifices are central to Voodoo and are an everyday occurrence in Benin. Spirits are said to dwell in blood, and at the sacrifice blood is offered to the altar and to other sacred objects. A message to the deities may be delivered to the animal (usually a chicken) before the sacrifice. It is estimated that there are 50 million voodoo believers in West Africa alone. More are found in the Americas, particularly Haiti. The religion is as alive today as it was thousands of years ago.
