#Documentary #History #Vajont On the night of October 9, 1963, the Piave Valley witnessed one of the greatest tragedies in Italian history. At 10:39 p.m., approximately 260 million cubic meters of rock, earth, and forest broke away from Monte Toc and plunged violently into the Vajont Dam’s reservoir. The impact displaced a colossal amount of water, producing a phenomenon often described as an 820-foot wave. Within minutes, the water overtopped the dam, swept through the narrow gorge, and reached Longarone and other communities in the valley. Approximately 2,000 people lost their lives. But the dam did not collapse. The enormous concrete structure remained almost intact, revealing Vajont’s most disturbing paradox: the engineering held up, while the decision-making system surrounding it failed completely. In this documentary, you’ll discover how the dam was built, the first geological warnings, the cracks spreading across Monte Toc, the studies kept within the company, journalist Tina Merlin’s efforts to expose the danger, and the opportunities that could have prevented the catastrophe. We’ll also reconstruct Longarone’s final hours, the mountain’s collapse, the arrival of the wave, the rescue efforts, and the long search for accountability. The Vajont tragedy was not simply a natural disaster. It was the result of ignored warning signs, underestimated risks, and decisions driven by the belief that a mountain could be controlled.
