Exploiting the appearance of the AR-15, they label it an "Assault Weapon" to mislead people into thinking it is a machine gun that escaped the machine gun ban. Consequently, individuals believe they are banning machine guns when, in reality, they are targeting semi-automatic firearms. Once accomplished, the gun control lobby will have the precedent they need to ban handguns since most handguns are also semi-automatic.
