Charlie Chaplin's Secretary Was Arrested as a Spy: The Untold Story of Toraichi Kono For eighteen years, a quiet man from Hiroshima drove Charlie Chaplin's cars, ran his household, opened his mail and guarded his front door. Toraichi Kono was at Chaplin's side in Tokyo in May 1932, the very week young naval officers plotted to kill the world's most famous comedian. Nine years later, the FBI arrested him as a suspected spy for Imperial Japan. He was never tried, and he spent most of the next seven years behind bars and barbed wire. This is the story of the boy from the village of Yaji who crossed the Pacific alone at fifteen, learned to fly an airplane, landed a job driving the biggest star in Hollywood and became the gatekeeper to his life. We follow him from the Chaplin Studios on La Brea Avenue to the May 15th Incident in Tokyo, the fight over Paulette Goddard's spending, a Navy sting run by a department store "robot" man, the Kooskia internment camp in Idaho, and finally an apartment facing the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, a short walk from where Chaplin stood in 1961. ā± CHAPTERS 0:00 Hiroshima, 1961 1:23 The boy from Yaji 3:52 Behind the wheel 7:30 Around the world with Chaplin 7:54 Tokyo, May 1932 8:52 Six young men at dinner 9:33 The May 15th Incident 10:21 The plot to kill Chaplin 12:38 Paulette Goddard and the wrong fight 13:25 United Artists and hard times 14:53 Al Blake, King of the Robots 16:05 Itaru Tachibana 17:36 The FBI moves in 19:14 A free man sails home 19:45 Pearl Harbor and the camps 20:25 Kooskia, Idaho 20:51 Movie night behind barbed wire 22:47 Home to Hiroshima 23:53 Chaplin returns, 1961 24:35 My Autobiography 25:19 Kono's papers and My Man Kono šŸŽµ Music & sound effects: Epidemic Sound Borders Ā· Frozen Sky Ā· Lost in Town Ā· Roaming Around Ā· Tablespoons Ā· Song of Hope (Kigan) Ā· Behind the Curtain Ā· Where It All Happened Ā· Total Bliss (Yukemuri) Ā· A Grand Opening Ā· The Lonely Traveler Ā· It May Be June Ā· Behind the Counter Ā· The Stakeout Ā· Deception Uncovered Ā· Gardens in the Rain Ā· Letters Never Sent Ā· Entangled Emotions Ā· On the Other Hand Ā· Longing Ā· Rome to Cairo by Balloon šŸ–¼ Low-resolution archival photographs and footage were restored with AI upscaling.
